Biography

Angelo L. Santabarbara is a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly representing District 111, which covers parts of Montgomery and Schenectady Counties. Born on September 14, 1972, in Schenectady, New York, he resides in Rotterdam and is a first-generation Italian-American whose parents immigrated from Italy. A licensed professional engineer, he served eight years in the United States Army Reserve, founded AMVETS Post 35 in Rotterdam, and holds the rank of Major in the New York Wing Civil Air Patrol. Motivated by his son Michael's autism diagnosis, he shifted from a 15-year engineering career to public service, advocating for disabilities, veterans, and rural resources. Notable roles include Chair of the Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities, Chair of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources, and member of committees on Energy, Governmental Employees, Mental Health, Racing & Wagering, and Veterans' Affairs. He joined the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators to promote heritage and scholarships.

  • Professional Background: Assistant Project Engineer at Lamont Engineers ; former President of the Capital District Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers; served on boards for the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region, Family and Child Service of Schenectady, and Cornell Cooperative Extension in Schenectady County.
  • Political Experience: Elected to Schenectady County Legislature , where he chaired the Transportation Committee and was Vice Chair of the Veterans Committee; elected to New York State Assembly District 111 in 2012 , becoming the first representative of the newly created district.
