Biography

Senator Angelique V. Ashby ** represents **California State Senate District 8, which includes cities such as Sacramento and Elk Grove. She is the first woman elected to represent Sacramento in the California State Senate in more than 20 years, elected in 2022 after narrowly defeating former insurance commissioner Dave Jones with 51.5% of the vote. Notable achievements include securing millions in funding for schools, community centers, parks, and fire stations during her time on the Sacramento City Council; attracting a Fortune 100 company to bring thousands of high-wage jobs to the region; advancing major flood control improvements; and championing programs for women and children experiencing homelessness. In the Senate, she has pushed for reducing college debt for foster children and creating an independent redistricting commission for Sacramento County. She currently serves as Chair of the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee and holds positions on committees including Judiciary, Governmental Organization, Revenue and Taxation, Energy, Utilities and Communications, and others focused on minority economic development, social determinants of health, and economic innovation. She is married to Zac, an emergency room nurse, and has three children.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, while working full-time as a single mother; later obtained a Juris Doctorate from the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento.
  • Early Career: Worked with foster youth, at a labor law firm, and in the Sacramento County public defender’s office; co-founded a consulting firm with her father focused on programs for foster youth, parolees, incarcerated women, and transition-age youth.
  • Political Experience: Elected to the Sacramento City Council in 2012, serving 12 years as the sole woman for much of her tenure and the only member in city history to serve as Vice Mayor or Mayor Pro Tem for 8 years; first councilmember to give birth while in office; elected to the State Senate in 2022, serving since then.
