Biography
Angelica Rubio is a Democratic representative in the New Mexico House of Representatives, serving District 35 in Doña Ana County since 2017. Born and raised in rural southeastern New Mexico as the youngest daughter of Mexican immigrants, she is a progressive focused on energy policy, environmental and workers' justice, equitable outdoor recreation, and protecting public lands. Notable achievements include sponsoring and passing House Bill 388, a gender-neutral bathroom bill requiring single-stall restrooms in businesses and public facilities to be labeled as such; chairing the interim Radioactive & Hazardous Materials Committee; serving as Vice Chair of the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee; and organizing awareness-raising bikepacking trips from Las Cruces to Santa Fe. She has opposed the U.S.-Mexico border wall and worked on local issues like minimum wage and national monument designations.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a degree in government from New Mexico State University; pursued a graduate degree in Latin American Studies in east Los Angeles.
- Early Career: Worked in Washington, D.C.; engaged in community organizing in Los Angeles and Las Cruces, including a city council campaign.
