Angela Romero

Angela Romero is an American Democratic politician representing House District 25 in the Utah State Legislature. Born and raised in Tooele, Utah, she comes from both Chicana and Assiniboine backgrounds. She has dedicated nearly two decades to public service, working at both the local and state levels to advance issues affecting Utah's communities.

Education

Romero earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Utah and later completed a Master's degree in Public Administration from the same institution.

Political Experience

Romero began her legislative service on January 1, 2013, initially representing House District 26 before transitioning to House District 25 in January 2023. She currently serves as House Minority Leader, a position she assumed on January 17, 2023. She leads the first all-female House minority leadership team in Utah State Legislature history and is the first Latina to hold this leadership position in the Utah Legislature.

In 2016, she was elected by her colleagues to serve as House Democratic Assistant Whip.

Notable Achievements and Positions

Romero has championed legislation focused on victim's rights, sexual assault and domestic violence prevention, and human trafficking. Her legislative accomplishments include:

  • Successfully passing the Prison Rape Elimination Act
  • Securing a $3.6 million appropriation for the Statewide Sexual Assault and Interpersonal Violence Prevention Program
  • Securing funding to eliminate the rape test kit backlog
  • Sponsoring legislation that created Utah's Murdered and Missing Indigenous Relatives Task Force, which she chairs

Beyond the legislature, Romero works with Salt Lake City's Division of Youth and Family Programs, overseeing community initiatives including the YouthCity Government Program and My Brother's Keeper.

Professional Recognition

Romero serves as President of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators and holds positions on numerous boards including the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials Board of Directors and the Rape Recovery Center Board of Directors. She received the YWCA Public Official of the Year Award in 2015 and the NAACP President's Award in 2022.
