Biography
Angela Cockerham
Angela Cockerham is an American politician born on August 20, 1976, in Jackson, Mississippi. She currently resides in Magnolia, Mississippi, and is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She is of the Baptist faith and is affiliated with both the Mississippi and Louisiana Bar Associations.
Cockerham has been serving as an Independent member of the Mississippi House of Representatives representing the 96th district since 2006. She switched her party affiliation from Democratic to Independent in 2019. Her professional background includes work as an attorney and an adjunct professor at Mississippi College School of Law.
Education
Cockerham holds degrees from three institutions:
- Bachelor of Arts from Jackson State University
- Juris Doctor from Loyola University, New Orleans
- Master of Arts from Tufts University, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
Political Experience
Cockerham joined the Mississippi House Appropriations Committee in 2013 and serves on several other committees, including Apportionment and Elections, Corrections, Judiciary A, and Ethics. In 2017, the American Conservative Union ranked her as the most conservative Democrat in the Mississippi House at that time, with a 56 percent rating compared to the 28 percent average for Democratic representatives that year.
She represents constituents in Adams, Amite, Pike, and Wilkinson counties and focuses on addressing community concerns, advocating for constituent interests, and participating in the legislative process on behalf of her district.
