Angel Ramirez

Angel Ramirez is a Democratic State Representative from Iowa House District 78. She made history in April 2025 by becoming the first Latina to serve in the Iowa legislature after winning a special election by a commanding margin, capturing 79.0 percent of the vote against Republican opponent Bernie Hayes.

Education

Ramirez holds B.A. degrees in political science and social and criminal justice from Coe College.

Political Experience

Ramirez represents a district that leans Democratic—voters in House District 78 preferred Kamala Harris to Donald Trump by 65.2 percent to 32.7 percent in the 2024 presidential election. She is an active member of the Iowa Legislative Black Caucus and has advocated for progressive leadership in her legislative efforts.
