Biography

Andy Beshear is a Democratic politician serving as the 63rd Governor of Kentucky since December 2019, representing the entire state of Kentucky. Born on November 29, 1977, in north-central Kentucky, he is the son of former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear. He was first elected in 2019, narrowly defeating incumbent Matt Bevin, and reelected in 2023 by a wider margin. Notable achievements include securing over $48.2 billion in private sector investment—the largest in Kentucky history—creating more than 69,000 jobs, expanding health care access for nearly 100,000 Kentuckians, leading responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, restoring voting rights to over 194,000 people, and achieving record-low recidivism rates. As Governor, he has also prioritized education, economic development like EV battery plants, infrastructure projects, and opioid abatement efforts from his prior role.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Earned a BA in Political Science and Anthropology from Vanderbilt University in 2000; received a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2003, where he was a Dean’s Scholar.
  • Early Career: Worked at an international law firm in Washington, D.C., then at Stites & Harbison in Kentucky, recognized as the nation’s top consumer lawyer.
  • Political Experience: Kentucky's 50th Attorney General , where he sued opioid manufacturers, created the Opioid Disposal Program, arrested record numbers of child predators, ended the rape kit backlog, and protected pensions; Governor of Kentucky , serving as ARC’s 2023 States’ Co-Chair.
