Biography
Senator Andrew R. Lang is a Republican representing Minnesota Senate District 16, which includes communities in Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Renville, and Meeker counties. Elected in 2016, he was re-elected in 2020 and 2022, and currently serves his third term. He resides in Olivia with his wife Susan and their two sons. Notable achievements include his military service as a Major in the Minnesota Army National Guard, where he has served for over 20 years as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot and logistics officer, with deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and participation in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve in 2014. He chairs the Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee and serves on committees such as Agriculture Finance, Agriculture Policy, Environment Policy and Legacy, Environment Finance, and Transportation Policy and Finance. Outside the Senate, he works as an air ambulance helicopter pilot for North Memorial Air Care, serves on the Lessard Sams Outdoor Heritage Council and the State’s Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board, and acts as Garrison Commander of the Minnesota National Guard's Arden Hills Army Training Site.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Willmar High School ; attended Ridgewater College ; earned a B.S. in aviation science and management from St. Cloud State University.
- Political Experience: First elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2016 ; Republican Party; member of Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar.
