Biography
Ana E. Hernandez is a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 143 since her election in a special election in 2005. District 143 includes parts of Houston , portions of Baytown and Channelview, Cloverleaf, and the cities of Galena Park and Jacinto City in Harris County. Born on August 25, 1978, in Reynosa, Mexico, and raised in Pasadena, Texas, she is a practicing attorney at Mostyn Law Firm in Houston, serves on the board of directors of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston, and is the mother of a son, Gregory Eli. Notable achievements include authoring HB 867 , the landmark "Texas Women Veterans Program" bill, which created the state's first program to help women veterans access benefits and study their challenges; serving as MALC Legal Counsel for the Mexican American Legislative Caucus; and participating in the 2025 Texas walkout to block a Republican gerrymander effort. She currently serves her tenth term, with her seat up for election in 2026, and holds key committee roles including Vice-Chair of the House Committee on State Affairs, and membership on the House Calendars Committee, Licensing & Administrative Procedures Committee, and Permanent Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Broadband.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena, Texas; earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Houston; received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law in 2004.
- Political Experience: Before her election, worked for Texas state representatives Jessica Farrar and Joe E. Moreno, and interned for state senator Rodney Ellis. Elected in 2005 to fill the unexpired term of Rep. Joe Moreno following his death; previously served on the County Affairs and Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence Committees.
