Biography
Amy J. Laufer is a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 55th District, which includes parts of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, and Nelson Counties. She was sworn in on January 10, 2024, and serves on the House Finance Committee, Education Committee, and Committee on Agriculture, Chesapeake, and Natural Resources. Notable achievements include chairing the Disability Commission, serving on the House Select Committee on Rural Health Care, State Water Commission, and Special Task Force on Free Speech; founding Virginia’s List in 2014 to support Democratic women candidates; and prior roles on the Albemarle County Social Services Board , Arc of the Piedmont, Charlottesville National Organization for Women, and as chair of the Albemarle County Democrats in 2022. She is married to Aaron Laufer with three children: Hannah, Adam, and Henry.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: B.Sc. in Biology from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ; M.A. in Secondary Science Education from Columbia University Teachers College .
- Political Experience: Former middle school teacher in Albemarle County; served in U.S. Peace Corps ; ran unsuccessfully for Charlottesville City Council; completed UVA’s Sorensen Institute and Emerge Virginia programs; trains women running for school boards.
