Biography
Amber M. Baker is a Democratic representative for District 72 in the North Carolina House of Representatives, serving central Forsyth County, including parts of Winston-Salem. Elected in 2020 after the seat was vacated by Derwin Montgomery, she continues to serve in the 2025-2026 session. Baker is an educator and advocate, previously hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, and residing in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She serves as vice-chair of the Forsyth County Democratic Party’s African American Caucus.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winston-Salem State University; Master of Arts and Ph.D. in educational leadership and administration from Ohio State University. Advanced training includes Harvard Institute for Academic Achievement, National Institute for School Leaders, Ruby Payne Framework for Understanding Poverty, Wake Forest University School Leadership Initiative, and City of Winston-Salem University.
- Political Experience: Elected to NC House District 72 in 2020 as a Democrat; active in Forsyth County Democratic Party.
- Professional Experience: Principal of Kimberley Park Elementary School in Winston-Salem from 2008 to 2019, serving over a decade in the role.
