Biography
Amanda Septimo is a Democratic and Working Families Party member representing New York's 84th Assembly District in the South Bronx. Born on January 3, 1991, in the South Bronx, she is a lifelong resident known for her activism starting at age 12, organizing against social, economic, and environmental injustices. Notable achievements include winning the Assembly seat in 2020 with 78.33% of the vote after an unsuccessful 2018 run, serving as District Director for Congressman José E. Serrano at age 23, and advocating for safer streets, affordable housing, good jobs, NYCHA investments, small businesses, and family opportunities.
Education
Septimo attended Vanderbilt University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science in December 2020 after initially leaving one semester early to work for Congressman Serrano. She participated in the Posse Foundation program at Vanderbilt.
Political Experience
- Interned with Congressman José E. Serrano in high school for two years, later returning as Community Liaison and District Director.
- Interned with the Legal Aid Society on domestic violence cases for Spanish-speaking immigrants and with Metro Public Defenders as a case-work investigator.
- Worked with the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators on education policy and resources for schools.
- Ran unsuccessfully for the 84th Assembly District in 2018; won in 2020, defeating challengers and ending a long-held incumbency.
- Currently serves in the New York State Assembly, focusing on equity, justice, and community resources in the South Bronx.
