About
Alma Hernández is a Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing District 20. Born on April 11, 1993, and raised on the south side of Tucson, she was elected in 2018 at age 25, becoming the youngest woman and youngest legislator in Arizona history. Notable achievements include sponsoring bipartisan legislation for crisis intervention training for school resource officers in 2019, a 2021 bill mandating Holocaust education in public schools , and community activism such as protesting family separations, aiding border families, and leading efforts against Affordable Care Act repeal.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a Bachelor of Science in Care, Health, and Society with a Public Health minor from the University of Arizona; Master's in Public Health from the University of Arizona; additional training in biostatistics, epidemiology, and social epidemiology from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
- Political Experience: Elected in 2018 to succeed term-limited Rep. Macario Saldate; serves on Health and Human Services and Federal Relations committees. Prior roles include campaign manager for state Sen. Steve Farley and others, precinct committeeman, second vice chair of her legislative district board, delegate for Hillary Clinton at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, chair of College Young Democrats of Arizona, and president of CatPAC.
- Community Leadership: Advocated for students via Arizona Students Association; served on Mental Health committee for Interfaith Community Services; coordinated HIV/AIDS programs with Powersource Tucson; provided medical services in Ghana and Panama; co-founded Tucson Jews for Justice.
