Biography
Alicia L. Hyndman is a Democratic Assembly Member representing New York's 29th Assembly District in Queens, which includes neighborhoods such as Laurelton, Rosedale, St. Albans, Addisleigh Park, Hollis, Springfield Gardens, and Jamaica.
Born in London, England, on August 5, 1971, to Caribbean immigrants, Hyndman moved to the U.S. as a young child and grew up in Hollis and South Ozone Park, Queens. She attended local public schools, including P.S. 34, I.S. 109, J.H.S. 226, and John Adams High School. A single mother of two, she has emphasized her personal experiences as a parent in NYC public schools shaping her legislative priorities. Elected to the New York State Assembly on November 3, 2015, she has served continuously since, including as Assistant Majority Leader from 2021-2023. Notable achievements include authoring landmark legislation establishing Juneteenth as a statewide holiday in New York, securing $30 million in capital funding for school improvements as former president of Community District Education Council 29, and advocating for educational opportunities tied to John F. Kennedy International Airport redevelopment, small business growth, and living-wage jobs. She holds key positions such as Chair of the Standing Committee on Higher Education, Chair of the Legislative Commission on Solid Waste Management, and membership in committees like Ways and Means, Education, and the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus.
