Senator Alexis Calatayud
Alexis Calatayud is a Republican member of the Florida Senate representing District 38, which encompasses part of Miami-Dade County. She assumed office on November 8, 2022, and is currently 28 years old. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Calatayud identifies as a Nondenominational Christian and has built her career around education policy and student advocacy.
Education
Calatayud graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2017. During her time at the university, she served as President of the Student Government Association and later became a full-voting member of the university's Board of Trustees. She also completed a fellowship at the National Campus Leadership Council in Washington, D.C., where she developed national student leadership training programs.
Political Experience
Calatayud began her political career as an intern in the office of Senator Marco Rubio while still in college. In 2018, she managed Vance Aloupis's successful campaign for the Florida House of Representatives and subsequently served as his Legislative Aide from 2018 to 2020.
From 2020 to 2022, Calatayud worked for the Florida Department of Education, serving as Director of Legislative Affairs and Director of Public Policy and Programs. During this tenure, she advocated for historic increases in public education funding and teacher salaries while working on education legislation.
Since entering the Senate in 2022, Calatayud has taken leadership roles in education policy. She currently serves as Chair of the Education Postsecondary Committee and Vice Chair of the Education Pre-K–12 Committee. She also holds positions on the Appropriations Committees for both higher education and pre-K–12 education, as well as committees on Fiscal Policy, Health Policy, Regulated Industries, and the Joint Committee on Public Counsel Oversight. Additionally, she serves as the Republican co-chair of the Florida chapter of Future Caucus and is an inaugural member of its 19th Collective, a coalition of women in government.
