Biography

Alex Mooney is a Republican politician born on June 7, 1971, in Washington, D.C., to a Cuban refugee mother and a Vietnam veteran father. He served as the U.S. Representative for West Virginia's 2nd congressional district from 2015 to 2025, becoming the first Hispanic elected to Congress from West Virginia. A principled conservative, he advocated for lower taxes, reduced government spending, pro-life policies, Second Amendment rights, and traditional values. Notable achievements include chairing the Maryland Republican Party and receiving awards like Maryland Taxpayer of the Year and Legislator of the Decade from the Maryland Taxpayers Association. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2024, losing the Republican primary to Jim Justice.

Education

Mooney attended Frederick High School in Maryland and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1993 with a B.A. in philosophy, where he played football and rugby.
