Alex Q. Askew is a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 95th District, which covers parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Born in 1985 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, he was raised by his mother, a public school teacher, and attended Tallwood High School. Askew has served in the House since January 10, 2024, with prior tenure from January 8, 2020, to January 12, 2022, initially elected to the 85th District in 2019. Notable achievements include passing 9 bills into law during his first term, 7 with bipartisan support, such as expanding workers’ compensation for firefighters, lead-water testing in schools and daycares, and funding for Hampton Roads Transit. As Chief of Staff previously, he helped craft the Ashanti Alert system, Medicaid expansion, affordable housing, and school safety initiatives. He prioritizes community safety, including gun safety reforms like expanded background checks, education reform, healthcare access, and environmental sustainability. Currently, he works as Community Relations Coordinator at Sentara Health and is active in New Jerusalem Ministries , board member of New Leaders Council Virginia and Democratic Business Alliance of South Hampton Roads, and a 2018 Sorensen Institute Political Leaders Program graduate.

  • Education: B.A. in History from Hampton University .
  • Political Experience: Worked on nearly seven election cycles, including Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign and Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign. Served as Chief of Staff for a Virginia House Delegate. Ran unsuccessfully in the 2014 90th District special election Democratic primary. Elected to 85th District in 2019 . Unopposed in 2023 for 95th District.
