Alan Wilson
Alan McCrory Wilson was born on July 16, 1973, in West Columbia, South Carolina. He is the son of Michael McCroy and Roxanne Dusenbury McCroy. When Wilson was two years old, his father was killed in a helicopter crash during a training exercise in North Carolina.
Wilson is a member of the Republican Party and has served as South Carolina's 51st Attorney General since 2011. He was elected on November 2, 2010, becoming the nation's youngest Attorney General at that time. He has been re-elected to subsequent terms on November 4, 2014, November 6, 2018, and November 8, 2022, making him a four-term attorney general.
As Attorney General, Wilson serves as the state's chief legal counsel, chief prosecutor, and chief securities officer. He oversees an office consisting of nearly 300 staff members and 90 attorneys managing approximately 8,000 active case files.
Education and Professional Background
Wilson is an American lawyer with prior experience in law enforcement. Before becoming Attorney General, he served as a prosecution division intern and as an Assistant Attorney General for South Carolina under Henry MacMaster.
Political Experience
Wilson's tenure as Attorney General has focused on defending the Constitution and South Carolina's state laws. Notable achievements and positions include:
- Leading a 26-state challenge to the federal health care mandate
- Protecting South Carolina's right-to-work laws and voter identification law
