Adele McClure
Adele Y. McClure is a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 2nd district, which includes parts of Arlington County, since 2024. She is the first Black person since Reconstruction and the first Asian person to represent Arlington County in the Virginia General Assembly.
McClure was born and raised in Northern Virginia, the daughter of an early childhood educator and a Filipino immigrant and veteran. Her experiences with systemic poverty and inequity shaped her commitment to advocating for vulnerable populations. She was the first in her family to attend college.
Education
McClure earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011. While at VCU, she served as Student Government Association president.
Political Experience
Current Position:
Delegate McClure serves on the House General Laws Committee, the Public Safety Committee, and the Transportation Committee. In her first year as Delegate, she championed legislation addressing housing affordability, gun violence prevention, workers' rights, consumer protection, renters' rights, public education and childcare funding, voting rights, and reproductive care access.
Prior Experience:
Before her election to the House of Delegates in 2023, McClure held several significant positions:
- Executive Director of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, where she led the development of the caucus's legislative agenda and managed operations for a 22-member body
- Associate Director of Eviction Prevention at the Virginia Department of Community Development
- Policy Director for former Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax
- Deputy Chief Election Officer for seven years
- Seven years of service on Arlington Boards and Commissions
- Employment at the International Monetary Fund and the Association of the United States Army
Recognition:
McClure was named to the 2019 Forbes 30 Under 30 List for Law & Policy and received the National Black Legislative Staff Leadership Council Top 22 award in 2022, recognizing her national leadership and advocacy work.
