Biography

Senator Adam Gómez

Adam Gómez is a Democratic state senator representing the Hampden District in Massachusetts, which encompasses Springfield and Chicopee. A lifelong native of western Massachusetts, Gómez was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Springfield's North End, which he has described as one of the poorest districts in the state. He is a proud Boricua and made history in 2020 when he became the first state senator of Puerto Rican descent in Massachusetts.

Gómez is a father of three children and a former small business owner. Prior to entering the state legislature, he worked as a community organizer in Springfield and served on various boards for local organizations that serve the Latino community.

Education

Gómez holds an Associate degree from Springfield Technical Community College and a Bachelor's degree from Westfield State University.

Political Experience

Gómez began his political career on the Springfield City Council, representing Ward 1 starting in January 2016. In January 2020, he was selected as vice president of the city council.

He was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate in November 2020 after defeating incumbent James Welch in the Democratic primary on September 1, 2020. He assumed office on January 6, 2021. Running unopposed in the general election, he won with a mandate to pursue progressive policies.

In the state senate, Gómez serves as Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities and Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Election Laws. During his first term, he successfully sponsored landmark legislation including measures to ensure equitable representation on the Victim and Witness Assistance Board, improve cannabis expungement record processes, provide undocumented immigrants access to driver's licenses, and eliminate hair discrimination in workplaces and schools.

Gómez is a tireless advocate for veterans and Black and Latino communities, focusing his efforts on social justice issues including criminal justice reform, immigrant rights, education, and civil rights.
