Abel Herrero

Abel Herrero is an American politician and lawyer born on October 29, 1969. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Herrero has been married to his wife, Matilda, since 1993, and they have five children. In addition to his legislative work, he works as an attorney in private practice.

Education

Herrero graduated from Robstown High School in 1988. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Texas A&M University in 1993. He subsequently received a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas in 1997.

Political Experience

Herrero began his public service career as a member of the Robstown City Council from 1999 to 2003. He was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives for District 34 in 2005, serving until 2011. After losing the 2010 election to Republican Connie Scott, he unseated Scott in November 2012 to regain the position. He served again from 2013 to 2025. During his tenure, he was reelected multiple times, including a 2018 general election victory against Republican Chris Hale. Recent election records indicate candidacies in the 2020 and 2022 primary and general elections.

In the legislature, Herrero served as the chairman of the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence and the chairman of the Integrated Eligibility and TIERS Subcommittee. He also served as the Vice-Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee. His committee assignments included the Appropriations Committee, Agriculture and Livestock Committee, Redistricting Committee, and the Defense Affairs and State-Federal Relations committees.
