Legislative bill overview

This bill proposes renaming the Plaza del Quinto Centenario in Old San Juan to "Plaza del Quinto Centenario Lucecita Benítez" in honor of the renowned Puerto Rican singer and cultural icon. The legislation mandates that the Tourism Company and San Juan Municipality organize a dedication ceremony and install a commemorative plaque displaying the new name.

Why is this important

The bill recognizes Lucecita Benítez's significant contributions to Puerto Rican culture and international artistic legacy, particularly her role as "La Voz Nacional de Puerto Rico" (Puerto Rico's National Voice). Renaming public spaces is a formal mechanism for honoring cultural figures and shaping collective memory in prominent tourist and historical areas.

Potential points of contention

  • Cost of implementation: The ceremony, plaque installation, and administrative coordination require public funds during budget constraints
  • Selection criteria debate: Questions about how honorees are chosen and whether other equally deserving cultural figures should receive similar recognition
  • Commercial vs. historical naming: Concerns about whether renaming a quintennial celebration plaza to honor an individual dilutes the original commemorative purpose
