Tammy Duckworth was born in Bangkok, Thailand. Her father was a veteran of World War II and Vietnam. Duckworth joined the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps while in graduate school. She became a helicopter pilot and was deployed to Iraq in 2004. In November 2004, Duckworth's helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. She lost both legs and partial use of one arm. Duckworth received a Purple Heart. She underwent rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 2006, Duckworth ran for Congress as a Democrat in Illinois but lost. She later served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009-2011.read less
