MaryAnn Shallcross Smith was born in 1945 in Ohio. She received her B.A. from Ohio State University in 1967. In the 1970s, Smith worked briefly as a newspaper reporter in Columbus. She later operated an advertising and public relations firm before taking several state government positions in the 1980s and 1990s, including heading the Ohio Lottery Commission from 1991 to 1994. Smith won election to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2000. She went on to serve four terms before leaving office due to term limits in 2008.read less
