Zach Wahls is an Iowa State Senator first elected in 2016. He was raised by two mothers in Iowa City. Wahls gained national attention in 2011 when he spoke in opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and civil unions in Iowa. His speech defending his family went viral on YouTube. Wahls is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in Environmental Engineering.
