Walter Michel was born in New Jersey in 1962. He attended Rutgers University, graduating with a degree in political science. After college, Michel worked in the financial services industry. In 2010, Michel ran for New Jersey's 12th Congressional district. He lost in the Republican primary. Four years later, Michel ran again, this time winning the Republican nomination.
