Tavis Rock Hasenfus was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New York University, graduating with a degree in economics in 2002. After college, Hasenfus worked at an investment bank for several years before deciding to go to law school. He attended Columbia Law School, receiving his Juris Doctor in 2009.
