Richard G. Collins III was born on November 10, 1952 in Alexandria, Virginia. He received his B.A. degree from the College of William & Mary in 1974 and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1977. Judge Collins served as a law clerk to Judge Robert R. Merhige Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 1977 to 1978. He worked in private practice as an associate and later partner at Hunton & Williams LLP from 1978 until his appointment to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in 1991.read less
