Norma J. Torres was born in Guatemala and later immigrated with her family to the United States at the age of five. She was elected to the California State Assembly in 2008 and served there until 2014. In 2015, Torres won a special election to fill a vacant U.S. House seat in California's 35th Congressional District. She was re-elected to a full term in 2016 and has served in Congress since then. Torres sits on the House Appropriations Committee as well as the House Committee on Homeland Security.read less
