Melissa Oropeza was born in Long Beach, California. She earned her B.A. in Social Ecology from University of California, Irvine in 1991 and her Master of Public Policy degree from University of Southern California in 1997. Melissa worked as an environmental scientist and policy analyst with the Environmental Defense Center before being elected. She was elected to California State Assembly in 2004 and served District 55 until 2008. Melissa focused on environmental, healthcare, education, civil rights and women's issues while in office. She worked to establish universal healthcare and protect civil liberties in California before her passing in 2011.read less
