Melissa Hortman is a Minnesota politician who serves as Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. She has represented Minnesota's House District 36B since 2005. Hortman earned her B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College and her J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. She is married to Joel Hineman, and they have two children. Hortman previously served as Assistant House Minority Leader from 2011 to 2012 and as House Minority Leader from 2017 to 2018 before becoming Speaker when the DFL regained control of the House in 2019.
