Lily Qi was born in Shanghai, China. Her father was put into a labor camp when she was 5 year old for being part of the student movement. At age 16, she came to the U.S. as an exchange student. She worked multiple jobs to pay for community college. She went on to earn BS and Master's degrees in Engineering. Qi started as a product engineer with General Motors and went on to hold executive positions managing billion dollar enterprises. She established the Center for Innovation at the University of Maryland to connect university research with the private sector and federal labs to commercialize technologies.read less
