Juan R. Candelaria was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico. He moved to Illinois as a child, attended high school in Chicago and joined the military after graduation. After an honorable discharge, Candelaria attended college before working as a Chicago public school teacher. He also served as a union organizer prior to his election. Candelaria won his first election to represent Illinois' 36th district in 2010.read less
