ABOUT
Joseph P. "Joe" Kerwin (born July 5, 1932) is an American physicist, former NASA astronaut, and politician. He was the first scientist-astronaut to fly in space. In 1965, Kerwin was selected as a scientist-astronaut by NASA. He served as CAPCOM during the Apollo 13 crisis. His only spaceflight was as science pilot of Skylab 2 in 1973, during which he, along with the rest of his crew, spent 28 days in orbit. The mission expanded scientists' knowledge of the Sun and Earth. After leaving NASA in 1975, Kerwin ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the United States Senate in Texas in 1976. He served on the NASA Advisory Council from 1987 to 1990.read less
