John Robert Hardy was born on December 23, 1950 in Ronceverte, West Virginia. He received his BA from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1973, his Master of Divinity from Duke University Divinity School in 1976, and his PhD from Emory University in 1992. Hardy was a Methodist pastor and professor. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives 2007-2008.
