John R. King is the 10th United States Secretary of Education. He was nominated by President Barack Obama on October 2, 2015. On March 14, 2016, King was confirmed by the Senate in a 49–40 vote. Prior to becoming Secretary, King carried out the duties of the Deputy Secretary of Education. In that role, he oversaw policies, programs, and activities related to P-12 education, English learners, special education, innovation, and agency operations. King also served as Senior Advisor to Secretary Duncan on the Agency's Common Core standards and teacher evaluation policies.read less
