Henry L. Ingwersen's political career began when he joined the Republican Party in the 1970s. He went on to hold leadership roles in the local party organization. Ingwersen ran for Rhode Island's 2nd district State Senate seat in 1984 but lost narrowly. He ran again and won in 1988. As a state senator, he focused on budget and taxation issues. He served as Minority Whip and sat on various committees overseeing government operations. Ingwersen left the legislature in 1994 after an unsuccessful campaign for Lieutenant Governor.
