Helene E. Weinstein was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She earned a B.A. degree in 1969 from Brooklyn College and a J.D. degree in 1978 from Rutgers School of Law. Weinstein was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1980. In 1998, she was appointed Chairwoman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee. She has served 10 terms in the New York State Assembly. Weinstein has focused her legislative work on reforming the state's juvenile justice system; protecting victims of domestic violence; strengthening gun control laws; and supporting affordable housing initiatives in New York City.
