Cindy Ryu was born in Seoul, South Korea. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was three years old. She graduated from Shorewood High School and later from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. Ryu began her career in public service working for U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell. She went on to work for the Washington State House of Representatives. In 2008, Ryu was elected to the Shoreline City Council where she served for six years before being elected to the state legislature.read less
